Simple Ways to Conserve Space in a Small Kitchen

We work on a lot of projects in the city and the one thing we often need to optimize is space. As with any small space it’s a game of inches and many of the major appliances manufacturers are starting to address this issue. If you’re remodeling a kitchen that you can’t expand, purchase smaller appliances that are still functional for your needs.

18” Dishwasher

If only 1-2 people live in the space, perhaps you don’t need a standard 24” dishwasher. For my clients that live alone, this is a no-brainer. It’s also perfect for those that tend to prefer eating out or take-out rather than cooking. We used the 18” Bosch Dishwasher on a full loft renovation (pictured above) we completed a few years ago. 

Undercounter Microwave

I’m not a huge fan of over-the-range microwaves. They are a pain to clean and I’d much rather specify a sleek low-profile hood. I actually recommend this for all my clients, regardless of whether or not their kitchen is small—and they absolutely love them. There are those that open with a side hinge, and others that open more like a drawer. 

Counter-depth Refrigerator

You don’t really realize how much a typical refrigerator sticks out until you need to draw a floor plan. Some can be as much as 34” deep—that’s 10” past the bottom cabinets. Then there’s the door swing that you need to account for. A counter-depth refrigerator is usually closer to 25” inches deep. It doesn’t sound like a big difference, but again it’s a game of inches. 

These are all great appliance choices you can make to save space, without making your kitchen any less functional.
