3 Major Master Bedroom Upgrades for Better Sleep

Moving into a new home or remodeling has its perks—you get to start with a new slate. The return on your investment is most apparent in spaces where you spend the most time. One of those spaces is the bedroom.

Blackout Shades

I specified blackout shades for the master bedroom on both Craftsman Contemporary and Newlyweds in Kensington and they love it. It’s a fantastic investment if you work nights and need to sleep during the day or if you have a street light right outside your window. In addition, blackout shades don’t literally need to be plain black shades—there are tons of designs that look like “normal” shades, a blackout option just needs to be confirmed. Here I specified a woven style and requested a blackout backing.

One thing to keep in mind is that with most styles, there will still be a 5/8” light seepage at the edges of the shades to allow them to move up and down without scratching against the window jamb.

A New Mattress

According the the New York Post, we spend about 36 years in bed on average. You shouldn’t be uncomfortable for nearly four decades of your life! For interior projects, I usually specify a bed frame, but I encourage my clients to go mattress shopping on their own because everyone’s definition of comfort is completely different. I should also mention that all my clients that are couples don’t regret moving up to a king-sized bed if it fits in the room.

Ditch the TV

I’m finding that most of my clients are ultimately deciding not to put a television in the bedroom. Most of us have read or heard about how blue light too close to bedtime prevents us from getting a good night’s sleep. As I follow up with clients, they don’t regret this decision either, because the benefits outweigh binge-watching their new favorite show in bed.

These are the top upgrades that my clients seem to reap the most benefits from in regards to sleep. Curious about other ways we can help you improve your bedroom? Schedule an information session call!
